RWENZURURU KINGDOM FLAG                                  RWENZURURU KINGDOM COURT OF ARMS

Rwenzururu is the original Lukonzo word for Mount Rwenzori. It means the land covered with snow or the snow caped Mountain. This is the way the Bakonzo and Bamba people originally called the Rwenzori Mountains. Explorer H. M. Stanley (1) was the first known European to hear the word on January 11, 1889 and recorded it in 1890.

Early on, as he moved towards the Mountain he had heard some tribes calling it Ukonju (Ukonjo, Ukonzo, Bukonjo, Bukonzo). The Banyoro called it Rwenjura, which meant the Mountains of rain. He then coined the new word from the two (Rwenzururu and Rwenjura) and nicknamed it Ruwenzori which was re-written as Rwenzori to date.
